Personal Message from Dr. Tony Mills...

The men's multivitamin was custom designed for the active athletic male. A multivitamin supplement is an essential tool for good health. Lower nutrient content in soil, increasingly processed foods, and gaps in our nutritional intake are just a few of the reasons why this supplement is so important. It’s a lot of work to take in the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables necessary to get the nutrition needed for a healthy body. For most of us, if we look at our diet objectively, we can see the need for the help that a multivitamin provides.

The multivitamin I have designed is a softgel capsule making it easy to swallow and easy on the stomach. Two softgel capsules each day is the recommended dose to provide optimal benefit.  The multi contains the important amounts of the major vitamins and minerals that I feel are needed including 100% of the RDI for more than 19 nutrients!

So what exactly do we want in a complete multivitamin? Vitamin A is essential not only for the immune system and but also for the formation of bone and proteins. Beta-carotene is the proactive form of vitamin A and it is one of the most powerful and best-studied antioxidants. Vitamin C is undoubtedly the most well researched nutrient with proven benefit in strengthening the immune system (for example, decreasing our susceptibility to viral infections such as the common cold) and building healthy body tissue, especially the creation of healthy collagen. I have opted to include extra vitamin C in this multi because of the scientific data behind its beneficial effects. Vitamin D helps stimulate the absorption of calcium by the body and thus helps to maintain healthy bones. Even though we can make our own vitamin D through sun exposure, the vast majority of the population even in sunny climates is vitamin D deficient. Vitamin E has many benefits including maintaining the health of the skin, facilitating wound healing, decreasing the risk of heart disease, and serving as an excellent antioxidant, fighting free radicals in damaged cells and allowing them to heal. Niacin helps to increase good cholesterol and keep our cholesterol in balance while Vitamin B6 is required to process amino acids in the body and form the important neurotransmitters needed in our brain. Vitamin B12 gives us energy as it works with folic acid to synthesize DNA, red blood cells, and nerve tissue. Biotin helps in the utilization of fats and amino acids and is integral for hair and nail growth. Magnesium, zinc, selenium, copper, manganese, chromium, and molybdenum are all important minerals that help to keep the body healthy and strong.

I’d like to say a little specifically about the importance of antioxidants. Antioxidants provide the body with protection again potentially damaging compounds known as free radicals. Free radicals are normal byproducts of the body’s natural metabolism. Unfortunately, they can be dramatically increased by environmental toxins like air pollution, cigarette smoke, radiation, heavy metals and pesticides, all of which we are exposed to every day. Free radicals can damage the body’s tissues and increase the risk of developing certain diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. Antioxidants provide preventive care to the body, protecting against the negative effects of the free radical damage. Traditional antioxidants as mentioned above include vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, and selenium. In addition, there are super-antioxidants that can provide extra often needed protection. I chose to add lutein and lycopene to this multi to really boost the antioxidant protection.  Lutein is a carotenoid found in dark green leafy vegetables and it is readily absorbed and deposited in areas of the body prone to free radical damage such as the eyes and skin. Patients with age-related macular degeneration have been shown to have lower concentrations of lutein and we know that lutein blocks high-energy blue light that can damage the macula in the back of the retina.  Lycopene is also a powerful carotenoid from the same family as beta-carotene and is found in high concentrations in tomatoes. Unlike most vitamins, it is actually made more potent by heat processing, so tomato sauce for example has more active lycopene than raw tomatoes. In clinical studies, lycopene has been shown to reduce the incidence of cataracts and macular degeneration and studies have shown that diets high in lycopene lead to a lower incidence of cancers of the prostate, lung, and colon, three of the cancers of most concern to men.

Many men’s multiples do not contain iron as iron is often thought to be less essential after body growth has stopped in the late teens. I have chosen to include a modest amount of iron in my multiple because some iron is still essential for good health and the men that I tend to see are still working on their bodies and continuing to have muscle growth even as they age. Men who are active and engage in regular exercise can have iron requirements that are increased up to 30%. Iron is an integral part of protein metabolism and oxygen transport.  It’s not unusual to find low-level iron deficiency anemia in otherwise healthy men. As men grow older, often the appetite decreases and iron intake from food is less. The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen increases the likelihood of iron deficiency. While some early studies showed that very high concentrations of iron might increase the risk of heart disease, the NIH feels that there is inadequate evidence to link high iron intake and heart disease. My softgel multi contains only 5mg of iron in each capsule thus providing 25% of the RDI for iron. I feel the addition of this level of iron will be beneficial to my patients and will contribute to their overall good health.
